Rolling-Ring Linear Drive Systems
Uhing traverse systems provide a backlash free reciprocating
linear motion. Using special offset crowned bearings, linear motion of the
traverse can be created by turning a plain unthreaded steel shaft running
through the centre of the traverse.
The linear drive traverse has a built in reversing mechanism which allows
creation of reciprocating linear motion, whilst the main drive shaft
continues to rotate in a single direction only. The reversal mechanism
involves reducing the traverse pitch to zero and then increasing to the
opposite pitch all in the space of a few milliseconds. This creates a
totally backlash free reversal of the traverse which in most applications
can be considered to be instantaneous.
A simplified version of the drive with fixed pitch and no reversal mechanism
is also available for systems using a stepper or servo motor on the drive
shaft.
